A headgate is the gate at the top of an irrigation ditch — the thing that decides where the water goes. Marisol Vega grew up opening and closing them on her grandfather's farm near Brighton. She started Headgate in 2009 with one truck and a sewer camera.

A lot of the Front Range's best-known plumbing brands now belong to national investment groups. There's nothing wrong with that — but it changes who the company answers to. Headgate is owned by the master plumber whose license it runs under, and she still takes the Monday dispatch meeting.
